About Sandtray Therapy
Sandtray Therapy (also called sandplay) is a projective, non-verbal therapeutic method in which clients use sand, water, and carefully selected miniature objects to create scenes that represent their inner world, conflicts, and recovery journey. At Trust SoCal, our sandtray-trained therapists provide a "free and protected space" where clients can express emotions, traumas, and recovery themes that may be difficult to articulate verbally.
Addiction often exists at the level of implicit memory—trauma, shame, and relational wounds stored in the body and unconscious mind before language develops. Sandtray provides direct access to this pre-verbal material. Without needing to explain or justify, clients arrange objects and landscapes that reflect their inner experience. The process of creating, combined with the therapist's witnessing and occasional verbal reflection, allows clients to access and gradually integrate traumatic material in a safe, paced, non-retraumatizing way. The tangible, sensory nature of sandtray often produces insights and emotional breakthroughs that exceed what talk therapy can achieve.
