About This Program
Parenting while struggling with addiction is one of the most painful and isolating experiences a person can face. Parents fear losing custody of their children, worry about the impact of their addiction on their kids, feel overwhelming shame, and struggle to balance the demands of parenting with their desperate need for help. At Trust SoCal, our JCAHO-accredited treatment center in Fountain Valley, California, we recognize that parents are not bad people—they are people struggling with a medical condition who also happen to have the profound responsibility of raising children. Our parent-focused program provides compassionate treatment while addressing the unique challenges and needs of parents in recovery.
Addiction affects parenting in measurable ways that harm children: inconsistent discipline, emotional unavailability, financial instability, role modeling of substance use, and exposure to family conflict and chaos. Many parents in recovery struggle with guilt and shame about the impact their addiction has had on their children. This guilt can be both a motivator for change and a barrier to seeking help due to fear of child welfare involvement or custody loss. Trust SoCal addresses these fears directly and works with parents to develop family plans that keep children safe while allowing parents to get the help they need.
Our parent program integrates family therapy, parenting skills training, and support for rebuilding healthy parent-child relationships. We help parents develop a custody and childcare plan before entering treatment, coordinate with family members or caregivers, and facilitate healing conversations with their children when developmentally appropriate. Many parents report that engaging in treatment is one of the most powerful gifts they can give their children—demonstrating that people can acknowledge problems, seek help, and make positive changes.
Post-treatment, our aftercare program helps parents maintain sobriety while adjusting to life back at home with children. We address the challenges of co-parenting with a former partner, managing the shame and family relationships damaged by addiction, and rebuilding trust with children. We also provide resources for parents navigating the child welfare system or family court involvement.
