About Equine-Assisted Therapy
Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT) at Trust SoCal uses structured interactions with horses to promote emotional healing, build self-awareness, and develop essential recovery skills. In these sessions, clients engage in groundwork and horsemanship activities—grooming, leading, and caring for horses—under the guidance of trained equine therapists. Horses respond authentically to human emotion and energy, providing immediate, honest feedback that mirrors a client's emotional state and behavioral patterns.
Addiction often stems from difficulty regulating emotions, managing relationships, and responding authentically to others. Horses are naturally tuned to detect these patterns. When a client approaches a horse with anxiety or disconnection, the horse responds accordingly. This immediate, non-judgmental feedback creates powerful opportunities for clients to practice emotional regulation, authentic communication, and the boundary-setting skills essential to recovery. The human-animal bond also activates neural pathways associated with oxytocin and reduced cortisol, promoting physiological healing during treatment.
