About Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a time-limited, structured psychotherapy that addresses how current interpersonal problems contribute to and maintain substance use disorders. At Trust SoCal, our IPT-trained therapists help clients identify the grief, role transitions, interpersonal conflicts, and social deficits that fuel addiction, then systematically improve relational skills and resolve conflicts that support lasting recovery.
Addiction frequently develops in the context of relational problems—unresolved grief, difficulty with role transitions, ongoing interpersonal conflicts, or lack of social connection. While other therapies focus on thoughts and behaviors, IPT takes the perspective that improving relationships and social functioning directly reduces the emotional pain and isolation that drive substance use. By helping clients communicate authentically, navigate conflicts, express emotions, and build supportive connections, IPT addresses a fundamental human need for belonging and removes a primary relapse trigger.
