About Reality Therapy & Choice Theory
Reality Therapy, based on William Glasser's Choice Theory, emphasizes personal responsibility and the power of choice in creating recovery and life satisfaction. At Trust SoCal, our Reality Therapy-trained counselors help clients focus on what they can control—their current choices and behaviors—rather than ruminating about the past or external circumstances. By helping clients clarify what they want, assess current reality, and develop action plans toward their goals, Reality Therapy empowers sustained change and personal agency in recovery.
Addiction often develops as an attempt to satisfy basic psychological needs—belonging, power, freedom, fun, and survival—through substances. Reality Therapy helps clients understand that these needs are legitimate and can be met through healthier choices. Rather than pathologizing addiction as a disease beyond control, Reality Therapy focuses on the specific, manageable choices that either move a person toward or away from their recovery goals. This empowering framework builds self-efficacy and motivation for change.
