About Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, collaborative counseling approach that helps individuals find and strengthen their own motivation for positive change. At Trust SoCal, our clinicians use MI throughout the treatment process to help clients resolve ambivalence about recovery, build confidence in their ability to change, and take ownership of their recovery journey.
Unlike directive approaches that tell clients what to do, MI works with the client to explore their own reasons for wanting to change. This respectful, non-confrontational approach has been shown to increase treatment engagement, reduce dropout rates, and improve long-term outcomes. MI is particularly effective in the early stages of treatment when clients may feel uncertain about their readiness for change.
