About Wilderness Therapy
Wilderness Therapy uses extended time in natural outdoor environments combined with structured therapeutic programming to promote profound personal change in individuals recovering from addiction. At Trust SoCal, our wilderness program engages clients in multi-day hiking expeditions, outdoor skill-building, camp community living, and nature-based group therapy in California's stunning natural landscapes.
Addiction often represents disconnection—from self, others, nature, and meaningful purpose. The wilderness becomes both metaphor and reality for recovery: clients face genuine challenges that test their resilience, work collaboratively with peers to solve problems, and experience the grounding effects of nature on anxious, dysregulated nervous systems. Extended time in nature reduces cortisol, increases present-moment awareness, and fosters psychological insight that can be more profound than traditional indoor therapy. The sense of accomplishment from navigating genuine wilderness challenges builds self-efficacy and hope that translates powerfully to long-term recovery.
